Eastern Oregon Conservation Corps

Wildfires threaten Oregon’s communities every year, but a new workforce is stepping up to make a difference.

The Eastern Oregon Conservation Corps is training the next generation of wildfire mitigation crews—providing young people with hands-on experience, career pathways, and critical skills to protect our forests, homes, and businesses.

See how two service providers are leading the charge, equipping crews with the knowledge and tools needed to make Oregon more fire-resilient. From clearing defensible space to gaining certifications in wildfire prevention, these crews are not only safeguarding communities but also building careers in conservation and emergency response.

EOCC is comprised of two programs:

EOCC is comprised of two programs: Home Hardening and Fuels Mitigation, creating paid job opportunities for local youth and young adults. The home hardening program aims to build the future construction workforce with a wildfire-adapted mindset. The Fuels Mitigation program will continue to develop the next generation of the natural resources workforce.

RFA: Home Hardening and Wildfire Resiliency

Provides youth with workforce development experience in wildfire resiliency and home hardening projects. EOWB plans to award up to $50,000 to each selected applicant.

What This Means for Our Community:

  • Safer Homes and Neighborhoods: The primary goal is to create fire-adapted communities by reducing the impact of fire where the wildlands meet our communities.
  • Paid Jobs for Local Youth: The program will offer paid work experience and workforce training to young adults aged 16 to 26 who live in Oregon.
  • Valuable Career Skills: Participants will gain real-world skills and job training, preparing them for a career in their community.
  • A Healthier Landscape: Crews will improve the health of our local environment by carrying out projects like thinning trees, pruning, removing invasive species, and treating slash.
  • A more resilient community: Participants will help harden homes against wildfire, giving communities a chance to be more resilient in the face of fire.

This program is made possible through a grant from the Oregon Conservation Corps and will be administered by the Eastern Oregon Workforce Board. EOWB is partnering with local organizations across our eight-county region to bring this opportunity to life.
